Week1 B: Social Media Use Today

Social Media is now part of everyday life. I sense that in today's society everyone deals with social media on a daily basis. It has intergraded into our lives and without realizing it. For some the results have been positive in many ways but for others it may seem to much to handle and it can become a burden. Social media has become the main source of current events, so much that people don't seem to care about the local news anymore. We receive so much information and advertisement on the daily basis at times we have to ask ourselves what is real and what isn't.

I recall creating my first social media account, it was the famous Myspace. I had no idea what I was getting into at first. It was something new and exciting, creating my own profile and connecting with people across the cities and countries. I was able to get in touch with family members that I haven't spoken to. Those days I recall getting home and running to my computer to check my messages and comments. Little did I know it would become a part of my life then. Now every single day I check my social media accounts, either to keep up with the updates on the daily news or any events going on. We have made our lives around these platforms of communication. I know I tend to just open an app just to scroll through postings, and at times just because I am bored or waiting for my coffee. Then I realize I could be scrolling through postings for hours. I find it very interesting how different platforms become more popular and we slowly transition to them just to keep up with the latest updates.

These communication platforms that have been created have been a great resource to many but have also a burden to others. Social media has taken communication to another level. People can link and connect easier than ever before. This not only benefits businesses but for ones personal use. I mean we even have a social media for the workplace Linkden. We also have a negative to these platforms where we spend so much of our time it can become a problem. Feeding ourselves with all the advertisement that we see can have a negative affect on our own mental health and eventually lead on to our whole body. This is were one has to know its limits on what is real and what isn't, especially the youth that can be very vulnerable.

Do people even watch the local news anymore? Where do the people get most of their daily information? Social media is where you'll see it first. Most of the people I know receive their news through one of social media platform. It is very important that we learn to differentiate what is real and what isn't just because we read, see or hear something doesn't mean it is legit. I sense people don't seem to take a step back and analyze what they see anymore, they just assume if it's there it must be real. All the advertisement we receive on the has an effect on us and our way of thinking. We need to analyze everything we see and take into consideration on how it affects us.

Social media is great when used properly and adequately. We can use it to our advantage whether it be for our own business, personal use or even when seeking a new career path. We need to be more cautious on what we are spending time on and evaluate how it affects us. We can get lost for hours by just scrolling and scrolling, but we need to take a step back and analyze our feelings and emotions towards what we see. Social media has changed us in many ways but in the end, we are the ones that determine how we react to it.
